Coral and Cameo of Torre del Greco among the first Italian candidates for the non-agri PGI

Murano Glass, Burano Lace, the Cameo and Coral of Torre del Greco are the first four Italian craft productions published in the National Bulletin of Protected Geographical Indications for craft and industrial products, the so-called “non-agri PGIs”.

This is a highly significant step for the Torre del Greco sector and for the entire Made in Italy craft system. Last 1 December 2025 the new process was launched and, already at that stage, among the first applications submitted on the ministerial platform were those seeking recognition for Torre del Greco Coral and the Torre del Greco Cameo.

Subsequently, the full operation in Italy of the new European protection system provided for by EU Regulation 2023/2411 was awaited, which became operational following the entry into force of Legislative Decree 2 April 2026, no. 51, on 7 May.

The new European system also introduces, for craft and industrial products, protection similar to that already provided for agri-food excellence, extending it to sectors emblematic of Made in Italy such as artistic glass, jewellery, textiles, lace, porcelain, leatherworking, natural stones, cutlery and musical instruments.

With these first four geographical indications, a new season opens for the protection of Made in Italy and for enhancing our outstanding craft and industrial productions, deeply rooted in territories, communities and Italian know-how”, declared the Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Sen. Adolfo Urso, in a press release dated 16 May.

The procedure for recognising Protected Geographical Indications for craft and industrial products is entrusted to the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, through the Directorate-General for Industrial Property - Italian Patent and Trademark Office.

Great satisfaction was expressed by President Vincenzo Aucella:

I would like to thank, on behalf of the entire category I have the honour to represent, the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy and the Italian Patent and Trademark Office for the excellent work carried out and for the speed with which, from the entry into force of the legislation, the applications were assessed and forwarded to the competent Regions. Likewise, I wish to thank the officials of the Campania Region who, with great care and promptness, assessed both our dossiers, issuing a positive opinion and thus enabling publication in the National Bulletin of Protected Geographical Indications for craft and industrial products. As happened on 1 December 2025, today too we are among the first applications published. Now the next step awaits us: once the 60 days provided for by the national procedure have elapsed, the dossiers will be sent to EUIPO for final assessment”.

For a niche sector like that of Torre del Greco, this path represents recognition of fundamental importance. The system of Protected Geographical Indications has already proven, in the agri-food sector, its effectiveness in terms of protection, credibility, international promotion and exports. The hope is that the same can also happen for craft and industrial productions.

The Corallo e Cammeo Torrese Consortium, together with Assocoral, works constantly to protect and promote the community of artisans and traders of Torre del Greco, through initiatives with national and international reach.

The next appointment will be on 21 May with the first edition of the “Precious Sea Summit”, an annual event that will make Torre del Greco a platform for discussion on gemmological materials from the sea: corals and cameos, but also pearls, mother-of-pearl and shells.
