It has been published in the Official Gazette – General Series No. 93 of 22 April 2026 – Legislative Decree No. 51 of 2 April 2026, which aligns the Italian legal system with Regulation (EU) 2023/2411 on the protection of geographical indications for craft and industrial products.
This is particularly awaited news, marking a key step for the continuation of the process of IGP recognition requests for Torre del Greco Coral and for Torre del Greco Cameo.
The measure will enter into force on 7 May 2026, making the new European system for the protection of non-agri-food geographical indications fully operational in Italy as well.
The decree identifies the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT) as the competent authority for the national registration phase, acting through the Directorate General for Industrial Property – Italian Patent and Trademark Office (DGPI-UIBM).
It also precisely defines the national procedure: from the submission of applications through the UIBM online portal, to the examination of admissibility and substance, to the national opposition phase, up to the final decision and the subsequent forwarding of applications to EUIPO, which will manage registration at European level.
The involvement of the Regions concerned is also envisaged during the preliminary review phase.
A concrete and decisive phase now opens, strengthening the prospects for recognition and protection at European level of Torre del Greco’s identity productions.
